9th Commandment : “You shall not covet your neighbors wife.”
Lena (AKA-Ammu)
How do I interpret ninth commandment?
The 9th commandment tells us not to covet our neighbor’s wife. By the ninth commandment we are commanded to be pure in thought and desire. Basic thoughts about impure things are not always sinful in themselves, but such thoughts are dangerous. Thoughts about impure things become sinful when a person thinks of an unchaste act and knowingly takes pleasure in thinking them. Thoughts can also become sinful when you give consent to an unchaste desire or passion. If your intentions come from a place of greed and lust, it is dishonorable. This will only move you further away from God. This commandment also tells us we should never desire someone that is already in a relationship with someone else. When we covet, we are wrongfully desiring someone that is forbidden, without regard for the rights of others. In conclusion, the ninth commandment wants us to be pure in thought and desire.

In Colossians 3:5, ¨So put to death the sinful, earthly things lurking within you. Have nothing to do with sexual immorality, impurity, lust, and evil desires¨. So we should have nothing to do with these thoughts, that will dirty our soul, but instead seek the light we can find in God.

We can follow this commandment in our daily lives by knowing in our hearts that wishing for someone that is already in a relationship is wrong. It can never be justified. You cannot violate someone's rights, by having an eager desire for someone that is not yours to claim. It is unjust and will only cause hurt and pain. If we do find ourselves in these situations, we can always look to our faith for guidance. We can avoid these temptations by doing a little prayer or by keeping busy. We should know our God has already given us everything we need, and that we do not need to have anything else to feel content.

We should not be greedy about our friend’s possession or jealous about their talents. God always provide the possession needed for once life and give unique talents. We should use God’s gifts in favor of his will instead of being greedy or jealous towards others. We should use other’s goods with their permission and use it responsibly without causing any damage.
Where can We Find this Commandment in the Bible?
We can see this commandment in bible in Exodus 20:17, Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbor’s.
This is when Lord give commandments to Israelites at Mount Sinai for the first time.
In Luke 12:15, Then He said to them, “Beware, and be on your guard against every form of greed; for not even when one has an abundance does his life consist of his possessions.”.
In this verse, Jesus teaches us to guard us against greed or desires. Jesus wars us to beware from the sin of covetousness.
In Romans 13:9-10, For this, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not murder, you shall not steal, you shall not covet, and if there is any other commandment, it is summed up in this saying, you shall love your neighbor as yourself. Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore, love is the fulfillment of the law.
In this verse the commandments 5 to 10 is concluded as the fulfillment of law. Hence, by not coveting neighbor’s property we are following Lords law of Love “You shall love your neighbor as yourself”.
How can we follow this commandment in our daily life?
This commandment is very meaningful in our daily life. We live in a world where our friends have many things that we do not have in our life such as toys or game gadgets. We always have temptation to have it as our own. But we should always remember God’s commandment that “you shall not covet your neighbor’s goods”. If we want to use their goods, we should get their permission first and use it responsibly. We could also borrow things from our friends and return it safely. Pray to God for things you desire for and if it is his will, we will get it. Sometimes our friends may have special talents like they are good at Kung fu. Instead of being jealous, we ask God, and he will gift those talents if it is needed in our life. We should also find our own talents, work hard on those, and use it to make our Lord happy.
